We know from the 2016 Venture CEO Survey that high growth companies are having an economic impact on Upstate NY. They are servicing national and global customers, creating jobs in the newer innovation industries and sustaining our local economies.
As we kick off 2018 it’s time to start thinking about what’s next. There are hundreds of innovation companies, many of which are under five years old, that are poised to do great things this year. From advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity, to big data and artificial intelligence, companies in Upstate NY are hiring new talent to help them conquer the world. Are you ready to join them?
1. Datto: Total Data Protection
Datto solutions safeguard thousands of businesses around the world from IT disasters, human error, and malicious activity. Services include backup and disaster recovery, and advanced Cloud-to-Cloud backup services. Founded in 2007 by RIT graduate Austin McChord, Datto now employs close to 800 people across nine offices including Rochester, NY., and has been listed on CB Insights’ list of 197 unicorns. In December 2017, Datto finalized an acquisition by Vista Equity Partners, a leading investment firm focused on software, data and technology-enabled businesses. Under the acquisition, Datto will merge with Vista portfolio company Autotask. The result is a single entity designed to empower Managed Services Providers. One week after the acquisition, McChord gave $50 million to RIT, the largest donation in the school’s history.

2. CommerceHub: Helping Businesses Grow Online

CommerceHub was founded in 1997 in Albany by Frank Poore, the company’s President and CEO, and Richard Jones, CTO. CommerceHub became a publicly traded company on 2016 (Nasdaq: CHUBA; CHUBK), following the completion of its spin-off from Liberty Interactive Corporation. The award recognized the company and its team for an exit that created wealth for investors and its founders/employees, as well as making the company a stronger contributor to the local economy.

SpinCar is a venture-backed software company founded in 2014 by Syracuse natives Devin Daly (CEO) and Michael Quigley (CFO). The cofounders are graduates of the StartFast Venture Accelerator. 4. SomaDetect: Innovation within Dairy Industry
SomaDetect is an agricultural technology company that provides dairy farmers with key milk quality indicators.With SomaDetect, farmers are intimately connected with every cow they milk, enabling them to identify problems early, make informed decisions and produce the best possible milk. SomaDetect was established in 2016 by Dr. Bethany Deshpande. In 2017, the company won the $1 million grand prize in the 43North Business Competition (watch Bethany pitch). SomaDetect has since relocated to Buffalo, NY.

5. Assured Information Security (AIS): Stay Secure
AIS was founded in 2001 by Charles Green as a software company focused on critical Air Force and Department of Defense cyber technology requirements research. Since, AIS has grown to become the national leader in this highly dynamic and emerging field, supporting customers throughout business, industry and the federal government with offices in NY, MA, CO, OR, MD and OH. The company’s mission is to define and develop generation-after-next concepts and capabilities to support and defend cybersecurity. In 2016, AIS acquired Troy-based GreyCastle Security, which earned a coveted spot on the 2017 Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies in 2017.
